All the computers on my network keep resetting their DNS server to 8.8.8.8 which I believe is a Google public DNS. I change the DNS back to 192.168.1.1 and when the reset to 8.8.8.8. happens (often after just 5 minutes) the computers can't find the NAS drives and sometimes each other. Oct 22, 2008 · As I'm sure you know, then aren't individual servers, they are anycasted. 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.4 are level 3 customer dns servers. Easily number in the hundreds. 8.8.8.8 is google which I couldn't even guess, but over a thousand is a conservative idea.

8.8.8.8 is a publically-available Domain Name Server hosted and run by google. Since it is publically available, there should be no reason why you can't use it, however you would probably be better using one that is geographically closer to you - Whois IP Lookup for 8.8.4.4
