As for updating SSD firmware in a QNAP, IF the vendor has a self-booting firmware image I have successfully created USB thumb drives from those. I then used a keyboard and the thumb drive to boot my QNAP (have to have Video output of some kind) and flashed SSD's while they were in the QNAP.
